Gulf Coast Veteran’s Health Care System
Launching “My Life, My Story” Service for Veterans
“It hasn’t been the easiest life in the world, but it’s mine. I own it.”
A Veteran said these words during an interview in the My Life, My Story project. The interviewer set her pen down and listened intently. The Veteran had been sick for many years. He spoke softly and weakly. His hands shook. With those 12 words, all the interviewer’s preconceptions melted away, and she was challenged by the accepting and determined spirit of the Veteran, by his courage and his resilience. Whether told aloud or coming up from a page, a good story does that. A story transforms a stranger into a fellow sojourner in life. A story inexorably joins us in meaningful connection to each other.
The My Life, My Story project believes in the teaching, healing and human power of stories. We believe that every Veteran has an important story to tell us all. By inviting Veterans to share their stories and writing up those stories for VA providers to see in the patient’s record, we work to build a more direct connection between provider and patient. The My Life, My Story project also shares selected Veterans’ stories throughout the VA Facility, with Veteran’s Advisory Groups and with the community. By doing so the project creates bonds of appreciation that provides for greater care and healing for Veterans within the VA system and without.
Successful My Life, My Story programs are already up and running around the country and we plan to soon launch this wonderful service for our Veterans and their health care providers throughout the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (GCVHCS). To do so the GCVHCS seeks volunteer program staff and interviewers/writers to help tell Veterans stories at each of the GCVHCS facilities and clinics in Biloxi, Mobile, Pensacola and Fort Walton. Over the next few months GCVHCS My Life, My Story project managers will facilitate training and coordinate duties.
Please help us get the word out about this wonderful way to show our appreciation to Veterans and assist in their care and healing. To volunteer, to learn more about the My Life, My Story project or to RSVP for the April 3 event, please contact Thy Truong at 228-523-5959, Thy.Truong@va.gov.
