BILOXI, Miss. – Two hundred eighty homeless veterans received support and services from the VA Gulf Coast and community-based agencies during the homeless veterans stand down event at the Biloxi campus on Nov. 5.

Approximately 50 of these veterans had not enrolled for VA health care services, but were able to enroll during the event.

Twenty community-based vendors provided services and information at the stand down, including the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

The volunteer base was strong and diverse, just as it has been at other VA Gulf Coast sites where similar events were held. More than 120 military, VA and civilian volunteers assisted veterans during the event.

Gwen Regan, Biloxi HUD-VASH case manager, who also served as the lead for the VA component of the event, was thoroughly impressed by what she saw. This was her first stand down experience.

"I saw great teamwork on display and the event went on without a hitch," Regan said. "I believe this was due to the excellent planning we accomplished in the months leading up to the event."

The last homeless veterans stand down of the year for VA Gulf Coast will will take place in Mobile, Ala., on Nov. 18. For more information, call VA Social Worker Kelly Estle at 251-404-6907.
